Artist Statement

I think of canvas like skin. My staples, needle and gauge puncture through its woven fibers. My brushes make marks that stain the skin and coat it in clotted and viscous paint. Much like a palimpsest; my work explores a layered history and evidence of life, reminiscent of the layering of scribbled love notes, a toddlers rebellious scribbles on a pristine wall and grime on the walls of bar bathrooms and in alleyways.

I am interested in the performance of being a person. How we use ornamentation and accessory to distinguish and transform ourselves, signal our interests, and claim community.

I do not assign value to one material over another. The rhinestone is of the same importance as the diamond. I use abstraction and ornamentation to challenge ideas of social status and class, the art historical cannon, gender roles; and to engage in the glam and grime of everyday city life.
